Well i had ordered this item for a Christmas gift for my girlfriend. When i bought it it said that i would receive it the Friday before Christmas. I paid extra for shipping to make sure it got here on time. I didn’t get it until two days after Christmas, i was pretty pissed. It was sent through DHL and they said they messed it up, so i don’t blame amazon. I only gave it a two stars because, yes the item was shipped in the condition it was supposed to be in. But that doesn’t change the fact that i didn’t get it for Christmas.

Out of all the modern Disney Classics, this one is definitely the worst (although “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast” run close second). Weak songs, weak story. It will make you a pirate for their days of glory in “The Lion King” and “Hercules.”

Our family enjoys many Disney movies (Mulan, Peter Pan, Fox & the Hound, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, etc.), but Little Mermaid is terrible! I can’t believe this plot was developed anytime after 1950. 16-year-old mermaid “falls in love” with prince after seeing him once (never actually speaks with him), gives up everything (family/talent/etc.) to see him again. If you are looking for a strong female role model, watch Mulan – it is amazing. If you are looking for a girl-gets-prince movie, watch Cinderella – it is a classic.

Fine, I was pretty young when this movie came out. But I watched it again and again and again. Knew all the songs and still do. I’m sure I will know them all my life. I do have a soft spot for “Dumbo” and “Robin Hood,” but in my lifetime this is the best Disney movie ever made. And since Disney isn’t making any more animated movies this may well be the last good Disney movie ever. Sorry all you Lion King and Beauty/Beast fans, they just didn’t do it for me. It’s sad to witness an end to an era of creative genius but I’m glad they decided to close their animation offices rather than keep putting out things like Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I haven’t seen any of the video sequels, thank god. Oh, and by the way, when I talk about the Disney movies made in my lifetime, I’m not counting Pixar, which I think makes great films. Unfortunately, it seems like they’ve left the cartoon musical behind too. I’m afraid we’ll never see another movie like The Little Mermaid again.

There’s no way to put a good spin on this bad plot. Little meek Ariel gives up her VOICE to get the man. Not too subtle, is it? The interesting woman in the movie – that wicked old wet witch – is the smart, intelligent, proactive and powerful woman. Why can’t Disney offer women role models who are powerful, smart and GOOD?

Powerful women are scary so they must be EVIL and seek to harm and diminish and denigrate other women. So much for sisterhood. It’s very disappointing that in the 21st Century, we’re still peddling this extremely negative message to little girls.

And what must Ariel give up in order to have her man? Let’s see…her voice, her talent, her home, her dreams, but alas, it’s all worth it. Or so we’re led to believe. Yuck.

I am profoundly disappointed that these type of movies are still popular amongst parents and children alike.
